"When the wheel has turned to Yule , light the log the Horned one rules."
As Yule is approaching we will be taking a closer look at this sabbat, the lore, correspondencies some rituals and spells that you can do for this upcoming celebration.
The word Yule comes from the Germanic "Jul" and means "Wheel".
The date of this sabbat varies from December 20 to December 23, depending on the year in the Gregorian Calendar.
It is also knows as the Winter Solstice and is celebrated by many people around the world as the beginning of the return of the sun and darkness turning into light. It's also a time to celebrate with family and friends and share the spirit of giving during the holidays.
Known as Solstice Night , or the longest night of the year, when the days grew colder and the nights grew longer, people of ancient times would light candles and gather around fires to lure back the sun. They would bring out their stores of food and enjoy feasting and festivities. Dances were danced and songs were sung and all would delight in decorating their homes.
On this night our ancestors celebrated the rebirth of the Oak King , the Sun King , the Giver of Life that warmed the frozen Earth. From this day forward , the days would become longer.
At Samhain. the Goddess followed the God into the Underworld and the Earth began its long winter slumber. As the Wheel turns to Yule , the Goddess is with child and gives birth to the tiny Oak King, God of the waxing Sun. The Old God or Holly King is defeated and returns to the Underworld to rest until Summer Solstice when he will again be reborn as Lord of the Waning Sun.
At Yule we mourn the passing of the Old God who is the Lord of Winter. This ancient God has many names besides the Holly King, including Cernunnos , Odin , Harlequin and of course Santa Claus.
Yule is also a celebration of the birth of the Sun King and nature's renewal.
